Cannonball is third officer on the Shortcut. Although his real name is Joe Shooter, he goes by his nickname Cannonball. He is introduced in The Perilous Journey.

Cannonball has a brilliant personality with a fabulous sense of humor. He likes the children and Captain Phil Noland. He also shares the thought along with Captain Noland that the rich Mr. Pressius, and all the other businessmen are "bullfrogs." He has a very adventurous spirit much like Kate and is also known to be extremely kind, such as when he took care of Madge for Kate.
He is known for a loud voice, as well as a fairly continuous stream of chatter. He possesses a strong love of bitter navy coffee, which the members of the Mysterious Benedict Society find unbearable.
