Development[]

It was announced in September 2019 that a series order for an adaptation of the Trenton Lee Stewart fantasy book series of the same name was close to completion at Hulu. Later on, it was revealed that Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi wrote the pilot episode with James Bobin set to direct. Subsequently, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were confirmed as the showrunners for the series.[10] However, in November 2020, the series was moved to Disney+; the decision apparently being related to the tone of the content. Dana Walden, chairman of Entertainment at Walt Disney Television, said that The Mysterious Benedict Society is “fun for the whole family” and called it a “perfect fit” for Disney+.[11] In February 2021, it was announced that the series would consist of eight episodes and premiere on June 25, 2021.[1]

On July 1, 2021, it was revealed by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay that the first season will stick to the source material provided by Trenton Lee Stewart’s beloved kids book of the same name. But should the series continue into another season, that might not remain to be the case. When asked to elaborate, they said that they hope to draw from all of the sequels (as well as Stewart’s prequel novel) for future episodes, mixing and matching elements rather than doing a straight adaptation.[12]

On September 28, 2021, Disney+ renewed the series for a second season.[13]

In January 2023, it was announced that the show was cancelled and would not return for a third season.[4]

Casting[]

In February 2020, Tony Hale was announced to have been cast in the dual roles of twin brothers Mr. Benedict and Mr. Curtain.[6] In April of the same year, Kristen Schaal, MaameYaa Boafo, Ryan Hurst, Gia Sandhu, Mystic Inscho, Emmy DeOliveira, Seth Carr, and Marta Timofeeva were revealed as the rest of the series regulars.[7]

Filming[]

Filming was initially set to begin in mid 2020 in British Columbia, but was delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[14] It officially began filming on August 26, with scenes shot at Gastown in November.[15] Filming for the first season eventually concluded on January 19, 2021. Eventually, filming for the second season will be relocating to California with the state's film and TV tax credits program.[16]
